Anderson Pushes By Hamilton 31-10
The Redskins moved to 3-0 for the season as they pushed past the Hamilton Big Blue on Friday night outscoring them by 21 points. The Skins started the game slowly fumbling the opening kick-off and allowing a first half interception that had the faithful a bit concerned early in the game. While the stats might indicate trouble, the talent and determination of the Skins lead to a 10-10 halftime score with the 2nd half belonging to the Redskins.
The defense faced a strong and quick Hamilton offense that was held to 125 yards in the air and 136 on the ground. To the credit of the D-Line (Walla, Buchanan, Elliott, Bornhauser, Ahrens), Hamilton was forced to look to the air despite the quickness and talent of their running backs. The defense started the game by holding the Big Blue to a field goal when the opening kick-off was recovered on the 15. The backs also marked 3 turnovers as Brian Schlosser, Nick Buchanan, and Justin Racer (with some help from Max Elliott and Kevin Cripe) recovered 3 Big Blue fumbles.
Special teams made some outstanding plays on the field as well. The well-coached Redskins played heads-up ball late in the first quarter after blocking a field goal for the Big Blue. Hamilton began to exit the field while an alert Luke Bissinger picked up the ball to move it forward to the Anderson 40 yard line. John Howard continued to show the strength of his leg; placing every kick-off into the end zone, adding a 31 yard field goal, and 4 PATs.
The offense relied on its running game to put points on the board. The offensive line (Norwell, Phillips, Schirmann, Hetrick, and Mancz) dominated allowing Anderson to mark up 278 yards on the ground. The Skins added 44 yards in the air but relied on its backs to put point on the board. Luis Perez scored two touchdowns on the night with 12 carries for 74 yards. Quarterback Daniel Rod contributed to the scoring with a touchdown for the Skins as he ran it in from 5 yards out earlier in the 4th quarter. Kyle Slater added the final insure for a win as he had an impressive 22 yard score with less than 2 minutes to play. Slater was the leading rusher for the Skins with 19 carries for 148 yards.
The Redskins will face a very tough Division II opponent on Friday night at Anderson’s Brown Stadium. Columbus DeSales will be making the trip south to try to put it to the defending Division II State Champions. DeSales had hoped to face Anderson in the State Semi-finals last year but were upset by the Ashland Arrows. They will be looking to make a statement as they strive to add points for a 2008 playoff run. Come out to fill the stands with ORANGE as we cheer our boys on to their 4th win of the season. GO REDSKINS!
